This article series is intended to help
you understand some of the terms and technologies employed by
hackers. With this knowledge, you will be better able to
ensure that your computer system (or network if you are a
system administrator) is adequately protected and safe from
prying eyes and unknown fingers.
Hacker Notes
In the old days, a hacker was someone who enjoys working
with computers and "hacks" or plays with programs, systems,
hardware and other similar things. Even further back, (about
20 years ago) a hacker was someone who worked on code
(computer programs) without adequate design and analysis. He
simply wrote and rewrote until the applications worked as
desired.
Nowadays, of course, the term has come to mean someone who
breaks into computer systems, writes viruses and causes other
unspecified damages. In this article series, that is the
definition that we will be using.
